A flyer only gets a few seconds of attention on the way from the door to the recycling bin. The design decides which one it is. Here's what separates a flyer that gets read from one that doesn't.
Lead with one offer, not five
The most common mistake on a flyer is trying to say everything at once — a list of every service, every credential, every reason to call. A reader on their porch isn't going to study a flyer like a brochure. Pick the single strongest offer or message and make it the first thing they see. Everything else is secondary.
Make the headline do the work
Most of a flyer's job happens in the first two seconds, before anyone reads a word of body copy. A large, specific headline — a discount, a deadline, a clear statement of what you do — carries far more weight than a logo or a paragraph of description. If someone only reads one line, the headline should be enough to act on.
Keep the call to action impossible to miss
Every flyer needs one clear next step: call this number, visit this link, mention this code. Put it in a spot that's easy to find even at a glance, and repeat it — once at the top near the offer, and again at the bottom. If a reader has to search for how to contact you, most won't bother.
Design for a five-second glance
A few practical guidelines that hold up across most flyer campaigns:
- One dominant visual or headline — not several competing for attention.
- High contrast text — dark text on a light background (or the reverse) reads faster than mid-tone combinations.
- A phone number in a large, legible font — readable even for someone glancing from a few feet away.
- White space — a flyer that isn't crammed edge-to-edge feels more trustworthy and is easier to scan.
Match the design to the offer's urgency
A storm-response roofing flyer and a "spring lawn care sign-up" flyer should not look the same. Time-sensitive offers benefit from a visible deadline and more direct language. Seasonal or brand-building campaigns can afford a calmer, more polished look. Matching tone to intent makes the offer feel more credible.
